Athens by foot

The one problem
about walking around
Athens is not the traffic
fumes or the lawless
driving. It's that half
the footpaths have
been dug up to
facilitate some
construction project for
the Olympics next
summer. This means
that if you have a pair
of white runners (like I
did), they very soon
turn brown with clay
and dust.
I only ventured into the
middle-class suburbs
once, on a hunt for an
Irish pub. They seem
to be dominated by
upmarket apartment
developments, like
other all other
European cities except
for Irish and British
ones.
Athens is a very big
city, three or four
million people, I think.

Just as I walked in the door of my hotel on the first evening,
this sunset greeted me from my balcony view...

The next day, I saw this old Orthodox priest
hobbling around the Bangladeshi district of Athens

I needed a rest from avoiding speeding bangers. I found a nice
coffee spot where I had the nicest cappucino in ages. Right
across the road was a cool-looking hotel

It wasn't long before I was noticing that Athens leads the world
in one commodity: old bangers. Ford Cortinas appear to be a
specialty, although my favourite was a BMW 3 Series
'convertible' (below right)
