I did a three day guided hike on this, the South Island's Routeburn Trail, one of the most scenic hikes in New Zealand. It mixes dramatic Alpine scenery with beautiful crystal lakes and lush native beech forests -- awesome. It plays second fiddle in tourist terms to the world famous Milford Track, which we didn't have time to take. You can find out more about it [here] or here]. The hike was November 14th, 15th and 16th. On the 15th, Australia were playing New Zealand in the Rugby World Cup semi-final (which they surprisingly lost). Being miles from anywhere in the mountains, we had no television. But a guide called Scotty hooked up a wire radio to get it in. Unfortunately I didn't get to hear most of it, due to a mini-moonlight hike a couple of us decided to do on the spur of the moment... There are more pictures which a feloow hiker, Sean Ansorge (from California) took and posted on his website. You can see them here or by looking or them on www.seanansorge.co m. (His are really good.)
